Few games have had as
big an impact in the way games are made as Cyan's Myst. No, it wasn't
groundbreaking technology or incredible hi-res graphics that made Myst
revolutionary. Myst didn't change the way games were made. It changed the way
games were THOUGHT. Myst challenged players to solve puzzles using
experimentation and ingenuity, figuring out complicated mechanisms with no rules or
guidelines. Myst was pure genius. Few ZZT games have had as big an impact in the way ZZT games are made as Cly5m's Kudzu. Kudzu presented ZZTers with surreal environments and bizzare scenarios. It was an instant hit, and the first step in Winter's evolution. Tucan's POP helped bridge the gap between the two games. Kudzu was based in exploration and had action elements. POP relied on inventory-based puzzles and had a rich and subtle plot. |

Winter loses the plot
but keeps the myst-ery. The player must explore an icy palace and three enchanting worlds,
laden with experimentation-based puzzles - making Winter the "Myst"
of ZZT. As soon as one enters the palace, one faces a simple though intelligent puzzle
that seems right out of Myst. The game relies not on text but on musical cues, which do an excellent job of directing the player towards his or her goal. The castle and its connecting worlds present very vivid and striking images: the mechanical caverns, underground forest, and night mesa. Each has a prevailing visual theme and each is a self-contained puzzle. Winter is a masterpiece from Myth, creator of the story-based puzzle game Nightplanet. Prepare to explore the musings of an idle mind. |
